Basic Rules Of Golf

Understanding the rules of golf makes it easier to play confidently, avoid unnecessary penalties and enjoy the game at any skill level. The official USGA Rules of Golf cover everything from player conduct and equipment to taking relief, penalty areas and playing a ball as it lies. This rules of golf explained guide focuses on common situations golfers are most likely to encounter on the course. For golfers searching for Rules of Golf 2026 changes, the current USGA framework remains the 2023 Rules of Golf, with Additional Clarifications updated in 2026. Use the sections below as a starting point for understanding the rules, then explore the full USGA resources for more detailed guidance.

The Game & Player Conduct

Some of the most important golf rules start with a simple principle: play the course as you find it and play your ball as it lies unless another Rule allows you to do otherwise. Golfers are also responsible for knowing the Rules, applying their own penalties and playing in the spirit of the game.

KEY RULES:

  • Play the course as you find it.
  • Play your ball as it lies unless a Rule allows relief.
  • Apply any penalties you incur.
  • Show consideration for other golfers and maintain a prompt pace of play.
  • Take care of the course by repairing ball marks, replacing divots and smoothing bunkers.

The Course & Taking Relief

Knowing how to proceed when your ball enters a penalty area, becomes lost, goes out of bounds or comes to rest near an abnormal course condition can save time and prevent additional penalties. The Rules provide specific procedures for taking both free and penalty relief.

KEY RULES:

  • You have three minutes to search for a lost ball.
  • A lost ball or ball out of bounds normally requires stroke-and-distance relief.
  • Playing a provisional ball can save time when a ball may be lost or out of bounds.
  • Penalty areas generally provide relief options with one penalty stroke.
  • Free relief may be available from certain abnormal course conditions.

Equipment & Playing The Round

The Rules also govern the equipment you can use and how you proceed throughout a round. Players are generally limited to 14 clubs, should understand the proper order of play and receive special permissions when their ball reaches the putting green.

KEY RULES:

  • A player may carry no more than 14 clubs during a round.
  • In stroke play, ready golf is encouraged when it can be done safely and responsibly.
  • On the putting green, you may mark, lift and clean your ball.
  • Make sure you play from within the correct teeing area when starting a hole.
  • Always identify your ball before playing when there is any uncertainty.
