Quick 5 With Chloe Wood

Quick 5 With Chloe Wood
AZ GOLF sat down with its Office Coordinator, Chloe Wood, to get a little insight on her relationship with the game of golf.

How Did You Get Introduced To Golf?
When I was 8, my dad put my sister and me into First Tee. It was fun until I failed the test at the end of the class and decided to quit, but that didn’t last long. I started playing at Brookridge Country Club in Kansas City, where my golf journey really began. I grew up playing junior golf at two different country clubs, was very competitive, and loved to win. In high school, I played with some of the best girls in the state and finished 5th in Kansas my senior year – a pretty fun way to end my junior career!

Did You Always Know You Wanted To Work In The Golf Industry?
Yes. Every job I’ve had has been a “golf job” – working in a pro shop, teaching First Tee, or serving as a Boatwright intern in Kansas City. I started volunteering with First Tee Kansas City as a coach when I was about 15 after my dad told me I needed a summer job. I moved from volunteer to assistant coach to head coach, teaching lessons in the mornings and then closing the pro shop at St. Andrews Golf Course in Kansas City at night. After my freshman year at Grand Canyon University, I became a head coach for First Tee – Phoenix at Wigwam for three years, which really kickstarted my golf career. Later, I interned with Central Links Golf Association in Kansas City and fell in love with tournament administration through marketing and communications – telling the story of the game I love. When I decided to stay in Arizona after graduation, I applied to AZ GOLF and became the Administrative Boatwright Intern, helping build the story of the Golf House. After that internship, I moved into my current role as Office Coordinator, working to create a place where all eight golf associations feel welcome and excited to come to work each day. In this role, I still get to tell stories, lean on First Tee values like integrity, honesty, and hard work, and use the administrative skills I learned in the pro shop to help the Golf House run smoothly.

What Is The Biggest Difference Between Kansas Golf And Arizona Golf?
The rough. In Kansas, the rough can really trap you, while in Arizona it often feels like an extension of the fairway. I sometimes miss Kansas golf with its big trees and thick grass, but I’d still rather hit a worm burner out of the desert than out of the woods.

What Is Your Most Memorable Golf Shot?
My boyfriend and I went to play Grass Clippings one night, and on hole 17 I hit a really solid 9-iron from about 127 yards. When I got up to the green, I couldn’t find my ball anywhere and was convinced it was in the bunker. I started to get frustrated, and then my boyfriend calmly walked over, looked in the hole, and there it was. My ball was in fact not in the bunker after all, but in the cup.

Who Is Your Favorite Professional Golfer?
Growing up, I had a huge crush on Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth. Now my favorite is Scottie Scheffler. If we wanted to watch TV growing up, it had to be whatever my dad was watching, so Sundays usually meant golf. I still remember Bubba Watson hitting that incredible shot out of the trees to win the Masters. Rickie in his orange outfit will always be a core childhood memory, and I love Scottie now partly because I’m such a big fan of his wife too.
