Wickenburg CC Claims First-Ever AZ GOLF Men's Interclub Championship

Wickenburg CC Claims First-Ever AZ GOLF Men's Interclub Championship

Wickenburg Country Club team captain Ed Hunt clutches the Interclub trophy as the sun sinks below the horizon, sealing a moment that will live on in AZ GOLF Interclub history.

“They can’t take it away from us. We’re the first ones,” he said proudly.

The inaugural AZ GOLF Men’s Interclub Championship, hosted Wednesday at Wickenburg CC, delivered exactly what it set out to create — a blend of club pride and friendly rivalry.

In fitting fashion for a season defined by tight matches, the championship came down to a sudden-death playoff against Rio Verde CC.

Eight players represented each team in the net Nassau Four-Ball Match Play format, but when regulation ended in a tie, the format shifted slightly for the playoff.

Each captain selected two players to represent their club in a gross-score Four-Ball showdown, beginning on the first tee.

Hunt turned to his team’s top players David Jenson and Jeff Harnasch.

“When I saw it was a playoff, I told [Harnasch] we’re winning,” Jenson said.

The two teams halved the opening hole, pushing the match to the challenging second, featuring a sharp dogleg left and hazards to the left and right of the green.

Harnasch stepped up to his second shot with 158 yards to the flagstick and delivered the moment of the championship, stuffing his approach inside five feet.

Shortly after, Rio Verde conceded the hole and the green erupted into celebration as Wickenburg secured the title.

At its core, AZ GOLF Interclub is where camaraderie meets competition. The idea was to fuse club pride, stunning courses and just the right amount of competitive fire. In its inaugural season, Interclub delivered.

The team series brings clubs together in a head-to-head showdown. Every hole matters, every partnership counts and every match is packed with as much fun as pressure.

Players represent their home course, but also get the chance to travel and connect with fellow golfers across Arizona, earning bragging rights along the way.

This season, the competition featured 10 men’s clubs from across the valley — Rio Verde CC; Papago GC; Verde River G≻ The Clubs at Arrowhead; Moon Valley CC; Wickenburg CC; Briarwood CC; Wigwam CC; Aguila GC; and Falcon Dunes GC.

These clubs battled over the course of 10 weeks, leading into a playoff represented by the top two teams in each division. In the semifinal, Wickenburg CC defeated Papago GC and Rio Verde CC took down Briarwood CC.

While team roster sizes are unlimited, only eight men tee it up for their club each week. That means every selected player carries the honor of representing his team, heightening the stakes as the season moves along.

“What this has done for me is it’s gotten me over the hump for competition golf,” Jose Vigueria of Wickenburg CC said. “I never feel pressure playing with these guys but today I felt pressure.”
