O’Donnell, Wilcox Defend Club Team Championship Title

O’Donnell, Wilcox Defend Club Team Championship Title

MESA, Ariz. — Sean O’Donnell and Chad Wilcox (The Club at Arrowhead) successfully defended their title Monday in the 28th Club Team Championship at Las Sendas Golf Club, winning in dramatic fashion with an eagle on the first playoff hole — the 536-yard par 5 18th.

RESULTS

The duo, who finished regulation tied at 8-under, found themselves in a sudden-death showdown against familiar faces, fellow Arrowhead members Eric Wojtcuk and Chris Thomas.

Starting on No. 17, O’Donnell and Wilcox rattled off four consecutive birdies to begin play. The duo managed an eagle and two more birdies in the remaining 14 holes, watching a late-lead slip away with missed putts down the stretch.

The playoff offered a chance to reset.

“They are great players,” Wilcox said of Wojtcuk and Thomas. “We had the lead all day today and couldn’t make any putts coming in. I was glad we had a chance to get a little redemption on 18.”

Following a long drive with a good angle in, O’Donnell planted his approach shot to 10-feet, leaving Wilcox with a putt for the eagle and the Championship title.

O’Donnell and Wilcox entered the event with an exemption earned through their victory in last year’s 27th Club Team Championship at Corte Bella Golf Club. Years of playing together have shaped a straightforward approach in the two-person scramble format.

“Chad is a great partner because he’s got to be one of the longest players in Arizona amateur golf,” O’Donnell said. “Our strategy is pretty simple, I just go up there and make sure and get one in play, let him wail away and go from there.”

That formula proved valuable on a course that challenged the entire field. Las Sendas’ championship set-up stretched 6,717 yards with desert terrain lingering in the backs of each player’s mind in the tee box.

“Every hole you feel like you’re on that edge of glory and disaster,” O’Donnell said. “It’s a true desert golf course.”
