Team Competitions

AZ GOLF participates in a select few annual team competitions throughout the year. Selection processes vary from event to event. Currently, the team competitions are included below.
Arizona vs Utah Shootout
The Arizona vs Utah Shootout is an annual Ryder-Cup-style competition between the top amateur golfers in Arizona and Utah. Each year the respective states alternate hosting the event.
The Arizona team is comprised of eight Open Men, two Senior Men (50 years+), two Legends Men (60 years+) two Open Women, and two Senior Women (50 years+).
Eligibility: Automatic Selection - The top eight members based on Open Player of the Year points lists, top two on Senior Player of the Year points lists, top two on the Legends Player of the Year points list, top two women on the Women's Player of the Year list, and the top two Senior Women on the Senior Women's Player of the Year list. Any remaining places will be filled by choosing the best players interested from the respective Player of the Year points list by the AZ GOLF Tournament staff.
Players on an active college golf team roster are not eligible.
Bob Goldwater Cup
The Bob Goldwater Cup is an annual Ryder-Cup style competition between the top amateur golfers and the top golf professionals in Arizona, with the first matches being held in 1961 at Moon Valley Country Club. Starting in 2013, it has been hosted at Phoenix Country Club each year.
Two teams of twelve players each, Open and Senior, will be filled according to the following criteria:
Eligibility: based on the top ranking of each respective Player of the Year points lists as of deadline provided on Golf Genius.
Open Team Automatic Selection – the top-11 players based on point total from the Open Player of the Year points list will receive automatic team berths. (The final player comes from the captains pick.)
Senior Team Automatic Selection – the top-9 players, age 50 and over from the Open and/or Senior Player of the Year points list and the top two players from the Legends Player of the Year points list. (The final player comes from the captains pick.)
If any automatic selection declines the invitation to play, that position will be returned to the AZ GOLF Tournament Staff and Tournament Committee to complete the team(s). The Tournament Staff and Tournament Committee will do so at their discretion from the AZ GOLF members with the intent of fielding the best team possible.
Team Captains: The Players with the highest total on the respective Player of the Year points lists will be the captain for that team. Each captain may appoint one AZ GOLF member at his sole discretion to the team. Eligible captain’s picks must be an AZ GOLF member in good standing who has played in a minimum of one AZ GOLF event in the calendar year. (If an Open or Senior player is unable to play, a replacement will be made from the same age group).
"The Goldy" is a Pro-Am held the day before the Goldwater Cup matches with SWPGA professionals, AZ GOLF players, Phoenix Country Club members, and The Thunderbirds all participating.

Pacific Coast Amateur Championship
AZ GOLF will host three players selected by the AZ GOLF Pacific Coast Trustees and AZ GOLF Staff. The Pacific Coast Amateur Management Committee has directed that each Association field a team of its best players using the WAGR and/or Scratch Players list. The selected players will receive uniforms and the entry fee paid by AZ GOLF. In addition, each player may receive a travel stipend determined by the Trustees.
