AZ GOLF Announces 2025 Award Honorees
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Phoenix, AZ — The Arizona Golf Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce the three inductees to the 2025 Class. The Voting Delegates have selected Bill Grove, Don Pooley and Gregg Tryhus who will be celebrated at a dinner and induction ceremony held 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club.
Bill Grove - General Manager
Beginning his career in the golf industry as an assistant golf professional in Myrtle Beach, Bill Grove served an eventual role as head professional at Willow Creek Golf Club, where he helped launch the LPGA Tour’s Henredon Classic.
After being recruited for a General Manager position of Tucson’s TPC Starr Pass and Florida’s TPC Eagle Pass, Grove became best known for his 17-year tenure as General Manager at TPC Scottsdale, overseeing a number of improvement projects. Among them was a $10 million renovation to the Champions Course, elevating its playability and constructing a new clubhouse and pro shop.
Grove also led a resodding project on the Stadium Course to improve playing conditions for its everyday players as well as the field of PGA Tour players who take over the track for the WM Phoenix Open each February.
Grove has been a PGA Member since 1975, celebrating 50 years in the organization this year. He has remained heavily involved with golf through retirement, offering free instruction to junior players.
Don Pooley - Professional
A college golf star at the University of Arizona, Don Pooley turned pro in 1973.
The Phoenix-native notched two PGA Tour wins — the 1980 B.C. Open and 1987 Memorial Tournament — and won the Vardon Trophy in 1985 for leading the Tour in scoring average. His highest major finishes were T-5 at both the 1987 PGA Championship and 1988 Masters Tournament.
One of Pooley’s most memorable moments was his million-dollar hole-in-one at the 1987 Bay Hill Classic. He split the winnings with the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women as a donation. Pooley is known for using golf as a means to give back, playing in dozens of charity and pro-am events throughout his career. He even hosts clinics for junior golfers.
After missing years of playing time due to injury, Pooley had a resurgence when he joined the Champions Tour. He defeated Tom Watson in a three-hole playoff to capture the U.S. Senior Open in 2002 and earned Champions Tour Comeback Player of the Year in 2003 after a three-stroke win in the Allianz Championship.
Gregg Tryhus - Industry Leader
Dreaming of ways to blend a world-class golf experience with a social atmosphere, Gregg Tryhus began his lasting golf legacy with the founding of Grayhawk Development in 1984.
Tryhus’ vision became reality with the opening of Grayhawk Golf Club in 1994. The facility quickly became a hot spot for golf, hosting the WM Phoenix Pro-Am for 16 years and most recently, three NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships from 2021-23.
Tryhus expanded his vision to Whisper Rock Golf Club, which ranked as Golf Digest’s No. 3 course in Arizona in 2023-24. He also spearheaded the renovation of Papago Golf Club, which included a facility for Arizona State University’s golf team, among several other improvements.
Tryhus served time on both AZ GOLF’s Executive Committee and Junior Golf Association of Arizona’s Board. More recently, he became the president of the Arizona Alliance for Golf, where he is working to create a unified voice for the sport in Arizona and educate the public on the golf industry’s efforts to conserve water.
